Hello there! It’s that time of the week again for my short blog about album’s that have inspired me. I’m having a bit of a throwback this week and have been listening to KoRn’s debut ‘self titled’ album. It’s been a while since I’ve listened to it through in it’s entirety and hot damn, every time I do it hits me and I remember why it’s one of my favourite albums.What’s always stood out and resonated with me is the visceral, raw and honest energy captured within the 12 songs here (not including ‘hidden track’). From the pumping drum grooves, percussive and attacking bass guitar to the brutal dissonant guitar riffs and intense vocals, this album really puts you in the room with the band. Funnily enough It was Fieldy’s bass lines and style that first inspired me to pick up bass guitar. I hadn’t heard it being played in such a way as he had before, I liked that out of the box thinking which definitely sparked something in me.
Honesty and meaning is what I really look for in music, lead vocalist Jonathan Davis pours his soul out in his writing and as a listener that’s always had a strong effect on me. His lyrics and performance on this record is what truly makes it stand out from the crowd. Drawing inspiration from dark and painful experiences, putting them on paper and recording his parts to beyond full capacity cannot be easy but it struck a chord with people and gave them something to relate to.
Don’t get me wrong this record isn’t for the faint hearted, it’s heavy, hard, brutal, sensitive, honest and unapologetic but that’s the beauty of it. It might be the unique, filthy guitars, the grimy tight rhythm section or the huge vocals you dig but If you’re looking for an album to just go bonkers to, or searching for a record that is filled with meaning and honest songwriting then 100% give this a listen through.
